After a decade of work, Rewilding Europe is now stepping up its operations. We have developed an exciting new strategy and set ambitious goals for 2030. We now are looking for a Head of Upscaling to strengthen our Central Team.

Since its foundation, Rewilding Europe has played a pioneering role in the evolution of the European rewilding movement, which has never been as strong as today. We have seen a solid base for European rewilding established. Going forward, we now need to kick on and really scale up rewilding. By 2030, Rewilding Europe wants to see rewilding practised extensively, at scale, right across Europe. To achieve that, we aim to inspire and enable others to adopt and apply rewilding principles, models and tools, so that rewilding is being practiced at scale across Europe.

Existing and new upscaling mechanisms and tools are partly developed and managed within the Upscaling team (such as the European Rewilding Network, Rewilding Europe Training, European Young Rewilders, Fellowship Programme) and partly by Thematic Heads (such as Rewilding Principles, Models & Tools, Land Access, Rewilding Carbon Credits, Rewilding Europe Capital, European Wildlife Comeback Fund, strategic partnerships, communication and engagement).


The Head of Upscaling will develop and operationalise our integrated upscaling strategy (a key cross-cutting component of our Strategy 2030), lead the Upscaling team (five members) and ensure maximum synergies with other teams within the initiative. This is both a highly strategic ànd operational position, with a focus on engaging, inspiring and empowering others to adopt and apply rewilding principles, models and tools, both within and outside our rewilding landscapes.

The Head of Upscaling reports to and works closely together with the Executive Director. The Head of Upscaling is a member of the Management Team and carries joint responsibility for the organisational strategy and performance. The Head of Upscaling works closely together with Thematic Heads, Heads of Landscapes, rewilding landscape leaders and upscaling partners.

Main responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and reports on Rewilding Europe’s Upscaling operational plan and ensures compliance throughout the organisation.
  • Manages and coaches the Upscaling team, sets performance targets and is responsible for workload management.
  • Leads on the upscaling objective of Rewilding Europe’s strategy, through reviewing and optimising current upscaling models and tools (such as the European Rewilding Network, Rewilding Training and the European Young Rewilders) that and setting up new impactful upscaling mechanisms.
  • Ensures rewilding principles, models and tools are being advanced, adopted and applied through scientific research, global, EU and national policies and legal and regulatory frameworks.
  • Develops, generates, and supports new networks, (strategic) partnerships and coalitions to meet organisational goals.
  • Explores fundraising opportunities and takes an active role in planning, developing and submitting funding proposals to potential donors and financial partners.
  • Provides support to existing rewilding landscapes where needed on upscaling topics.

Key qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • At least 8 years of professional experience in upscaling tools and mechanisms, including network building, establishing, facilitation and managing strategic partnerships and relations.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience in landscape restoration and/or rewilding.
  • A track record in successful inter-cultural communication in an international working environment.
  • Experience and ability to develop fundraising proposals.
  • Full proficiency in English (read, written, and spoken) is required, additional European languages are a plus.

  • The candidate will ideally be located in the Netherlands.
  • This position is graded in salary scale 10.
