The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization working to make sustainable land use and responsible business practices the norm. In January 2018, the Rainforest Alliance merged with UTZ, a global program and label for sustainable farming, leading to an organization with 450 staff in more than 14 countries and actively working with local communities in over 70 countries. The merged Rainforest Alliance organization has headquarters in both New York and Amsterdam. The Rainforest Alliance is looking to engage an inspiring Global Director HR to lead the HR teams and be a competent sparring partner for our leadership, enabling us to build happy and effective teams and achieve further sustainability impact and growth.

Position summary:

You will proactively support the fresh post-merger leadership team in cooperation, (the implementation of the) strategy, culture and structure. You oversee all HR activities for (overseas) staff and you provide leadership in the deployment of HR initiatives and development and implementation of human resource policies, practices and programs. Important topics are employee engagement and self-direction in the ‘new’ organization, performance, health, development and training, talent acquisition, compensation and benefits, administration and compliance, governance, and crisis management.

You will travel regularly to The New York office and various locations in The Americas, Africa and Asia, to make sure teams are optimally empowered and connected.  You will be Amsterdam based and report to the CFO (New York).


  • Global HR strategy and leadership on culture and structure
  • Coaching and support of Leadership Team and Senior Managers
  • HR team (global HR team of 8) topics and implementation management


  • Minimum 5 years’ line management experience in international HR in a multi-location environment; Both business and not-for-profit organization experience preferred; Understanding of multi-stakeholder sustainability organizations preferred;
  • Experience proactively managing change; Prior experience managing HR through/after a merger and acquisition process highly preferred;
  • People manager with strong leadership, strategic, organization development and communications (interpersonal and writing) skills; Diplomacy and tact, coach and facilitator;
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 25 % of the time to international operating locations;
  • Near-native fluency in English. Spanish proficiency is strongly preferred;
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in human resources; Master’s degree a plus; PHR or SPHR certification a plus.
